At least 20 people, including the mayor of Merca town Abdullahi Ali Wafow, were killed in two explosions in the Lower Shabelle region on Wednesday.
The first attack was a suicide bombing that targeted officials in Merca town, which killed at least 13 people, including the mayor while wounding a number of the people, officials said.
The Islamist militant group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.
Southwest State President Abdiasis Mahamed Laftagareen condemned the suicide bombing and the mayor’s killing, calling him “one of the best civil servants” in Somalia.
The second attack was a landmine explosion that rocked a busy livestock market in Afgoye town, killing seven people and wounding more than 14 others.
