At least three soldiers were killed and several others, including two journalists, wounded in a landmine blast on the outskirt of Mataban district in the Hiiraan region on Monday.
The landmine attacked a convoy carrying the governor of the Hiiraan region and army officials as they were conducting security operations in the Qabno areas of the Mataban district. A HOL journalist in Beledweyne said that the blast struck the vehicle carrying journalists and soldiers.
The director of the Hirshabelle administration radio station in the Hiraan region, Khalid Mohamud Osman (Ilkase), and a journalist for Hirshabelle TV, Abdikarin Shabelle, were among those wounded in the blast. The injured people were taken to Guri El, Galgadud region, to airlift to Mogadishu for treatment.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but al Shabaab typically stages such attacks against military targets.
The federal and Hirshabelle regional state security forces have been conducting operations in many locations near Beledweyne town over the last few days.
